    TheviralspreadofQAnon,whichhasalreadypromptedviolenceintheUnitedStates,wouldbeunthinkablewithoutsocialmedia―onemorereminderoftheurgentneedforsensibleregulationofsocialmediaplatforms.
    Thedangerouslybizarrefar-rightbeliefsmadeasplashwithPizzagate,a2016conspiracytheoryclaimingthatHillaryClintonandotherDemocratswererunningapedophileringfromthebasementofaD.C.pizzeria.Thenthismorphedintoamuchmoreelaborateandderangedideologyaboutaglobalcabalofpowerfulpedophiles,a“deepstate”runningtheworldand―borrowingfromancientantisemiticconspiracytheories―drinkingthebloodofchildrentostayyoung.BelieversbegantoseeDonaldTrumpastheirsavior,andhewashappytoaccepttheirpraise.

    TheU.S.socialmediagiantseventuallytriedtocurtailQAnon’sspread,butthatdidn’tstopQAnonbackersfrombeingelectedtoCongress,whileothersjoinedtheJan.6assaultontheU.S.Capitol.
    YoumightthinkthattheentireQAnonconstructistooU.S.-centrictogarnermuchinterestinothercountries―butyou’dbewrong.Thecovid-19pandemic,whichhasturbochargedallsortsofconspiracytheories,hasactedasaglobalaccelerant.Anon-exhaustivecheckbytheWebwatchdogNewsGuardfoundmorethan448,000QAnonfollowersinEuropealonelastyear.Byonecount,ithastakenrootinabout70countries,sproutinglocalversionswiththeirownmind-bogglingideas.
